Introduction to Xeriscape

It was a short night, so this will be a short blog today.  :)   Last evening, I traveled to a small town on the Montana - North Dakota border to do a presentation on xeriscape gardening.  It was an enthusiastic group of gardeners and a fun evening, but it is a long way from home.

Xeriscape gardening is a concept that was developed in Colorado in the early 1980's to address water issues in the front range area.  It is drought tolerant gardening, based on proper garden design, good quality soil, using the correct plant material, irrigating appropriately, and mulching effectively.  It is an approach to gardening that allows me to have lush, beautiful gardens in the semi-arid North Dakota climate without spending all my time and money watering.

We'll talk more about xeriscaping in future blogs, because it really is the cornerstone of Wiese Acres.  In the meantime, here are a few pictures of  what xeriscaping can look like.
